Lucky I checked my tracking Emails this morning before our planned outing. Sara's Christmas present had arrived in Brisbane overnight and was out on the van for delivery. Mike had a scan booked so we stayed in as a signature was needed. It could have been worse, it arrived at mid-day, just as Mike arrived home.
Having decided that it was too late for our planned drive, we ate our packed lunch on the patio, and went to Indoorpilly Mall for some essential shopping. I forgot the phone charger so that was one, Pam hadn't found her swimsuit and we needed wrapping paper. Plenty at home......
Tha Mall is huge and we were tired by the time we'd walked all 4 floors looking for the appropriate shops. The fourth phone shop provided the charger and Pam found a suitable costume.
We still had a couple of hours of daylight left, it's light at 4.30 and dark by 6.30., so we drove to Pam's beloved Mount Cootha Botanical Gardens, just 15 minutes drive away. Blue sky to-day, much better for photography. The place is an oasis of calm, very few visitors to-day and quiet apart from the delightful but raucous Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.
Yesterday's spiky stemmed tufted top tree is a
Alerted by another photographer, Pam spotted an Australasian Grebe and striped young on a distant nest amongst the water lilies on the central lake.
The birds here are quite tame and this Willie Wagtail managed to stop wagging its constantly moving tail long enough for a photo.
A Water Monitor Lizard challenged allcomers on the path.
Kookaburras are very endearing and their call is the essence of Australia. I can't resist them. .
We arrived home at the same time as a very tired Sara. Josh was swimming at a friend's house. Pam tried on her new swimmers to show Sara and decided to christen them, soon joined by Harry. Sara and I sat round the pool where we all chatted, joined by Snuffy the cat. He's really rather poorly now, constantly trying to clear his blocked nose - a result of cat flu before Sara rescued him.
Garden Skinks were added to the lizard list before the approaching dusk drove us in for a chicken fajitas tea. Josh challenged Pam to a game of Connect 4 whilst I downloaded photos. I hope we don't wake up in the middle of the night again, but if we do wake early we shall go out birding, probably Mount Glorious.
